Dietitians in India are recognized health professionals who have at least a bachelor's degree. Using evidence-based approaches, dietitians work autonomously to empower or support individuals, families, groups, and populations to provide or select foods that are nutritionally adequate, safe, palatable, and sustainable. Dietitians assess specific nutritional requirements throughout life and translate them into counseling and/or treatment. This will maintain, reduce risk or restore health as well as reduce discomfort in palliative care. Beyond healthcare, dietitians improve the nutritional environment for all through governments, industry, academia, and research. Indian dietitians use their competencies in a wide range of situations and locations within financial and regulatory frameworks. They can adapt their role depending on the immediate need and are increasingly required to develop more specialized competencies. There are three main, sometimes overlapping, areas of dietetic work in India: clinical, dietary and public/community health (see below). In addition, dietitians may work in other areas that require expertise in health, food and/or nutrition, eg academia/education, primary care, food industry, media, research and sport.
